Telling the story of the future of London

Transport for London’s (TfL) Strategy Team had been researching future transport scenarios for London, in preparation for the Mayor’s next transport strategy. The scenarios had already been created, and communicated within TfL through formal means, with their importance for future investment plans already highlighted.

We were tasked with delivering a Scenario Game that would enable different teams within TfL to better understand the scenarios, and their implications for their own investment plans.

Future scenarios played.
We collaborated with the Strategy Team on a beta test of TfL’s own version of the Scenario Game. This included:

  • Reviewing the written scenarios to check for internal consistenct and robustness of evidence;
  • Identifying key megatrends of most importance within the London context;
  • Identify the most influential rols and organisations to be incorporated in the scenario game;
  • Develop a TfL-branded version of the Scenario Game materials.

We then ran a beta version of the Scenario Game with the Strategy Team, plus a selected few others from across TfL. The game took place at TfL’s corporate headquarters, consisting of the following:

  • Producing a before survey to identify participants’ motivations for engaging with the scenario game
  • Playing 2 scenarios with the team through a joint Mobility Lab and TfL facilitated session;
  • Running a reflections session immediately after the game, to provide immediate feedback on the ability of the game to communicate key scenario concepts.

Outcomes

The pilot session was attended by 15 participants from across Transport for London. A new version of the Scenario Game was created for just this session, and was tested on the participants. The feedback on the usefulness of the tool was positive, with participants reporting that they enjoyed the day.

TfL are exploring options for expanding the use of the scenario game across the business.
"The Scenario Game was fascinating to play. It really got everyone talking about our scenario work, and everyone was really engaged. Than you for coming along and playing it with us."
