Co-designing new mobility services in rural Scotland.
Providing sustainable, accessible transport services to rural areas is a constant challenge. With low population densities, high car ownership, poor connectivity, and reducing rural public services, for those without access to a car living in rural areas can be isolating. What's more, new mobility services that could tackle these problems are largely launching in urban areas. A new approach is needed.
We worked with the Connected Places Catapult and JLM on a Discovery Project to understand the needs of rural transport users better, and to co-design new mobility services with them. This project focussed on the community of Inverurie in Scotland.

Our focus in this project was review of the evidence base, undertaking user research, and providing support for the delivery of a community and stakeholder co-design workshop. JLM and Connected Places Catapult led on local surveys and intelligence gathering.
We undertook an extensive literature review covering rural mobility issues, and innovation in transport technologies in rural areas. This review was global in scope, taking in examples from Europe, Africa, and North America, assessing these new solutions for their potential suitability for rural Scotland. This is where our data analysis supported our work.

Outcomes
Following the completion of the workshop, 4 projects were identified and recommended to the Connected Places Catapult to progress with stakeholders. It is intended that these projects will be subject to funding bids during 2019.
